Background of the Study
Contactless payments represent a major technological advancement in retail banking, offering enhanced convenience, speed, and security for financial transactions. Access Bank in Oyo State has been at the forefront of adopting contactless payment systems to meet evolving customer demands and improve operational efficiency. This innovation facilitates swift transactions through NFC-enabled devices, reducing the need for cash handling and physical card swipes (Oladipo, 2023).
The rapid growth of digital payment ecosystems has spurred retail banks to integrate contactless technologies into their service portfolios. Access Bank’s initiatives include upgrading point-of-sale systems, partnering with fintech firms, and launching customer education campaigns to ensure smooth adoption. These measures have not only improved customer satisfaction but also reduced transaction times and operational costs. However, the transition to contactless payments also poses challenges, such as security concerns, technological integration issues, and customer resistance due to unfamiliarity with new technologies (Balogun, 2024).
This study critically evaluates the adoption of contactless payment systems by Access Bank, analyzing their impact on transaction efficiency and customer experiences. The research investigates both the benefits and challenges associated with this digital transformation, offering insights into how contactless payments can further enhance retail banking performance in a competitive market (Adekunle, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although contactless payments have streamlined transaction processes at Access Bank, several challenges inhibit their full potential. Customers have raised concerns over data security and privacy, while technical glitches and connectivity issues sometimes result in transaction failures (Oladipo, 2023). Moreover, a segment of the bank’s clientele remains hesitant to adopt new payment technologies due to low digital literacy and resistance to change. These factors contribute to inconsistent user experiences and limit the overall adoption rate of contactless payments.
Additionally, the bank faces operational challenges related to integrating contactless systems with existing infrastructures. Inadequate staff training and delayed system updates further exacerbate these issues, impacting customer confidence and satisfaction. This study seeks to identify the factors that impede the seamless adoption of contactless payments and evaluate the impact of these challenges on overall transaction efficiency. The findings are intended to guide the development of targeted strategies that address technical, educational, and operational barriers, ultimately enhancing the customer experience and boosting the bank’s competitive edge (Balogun, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the adoption and performance of contactless payment systems at Access Bank.
  • To identify the challenges hindering widespread adoption of contactless payments.
  • To recommend strategies for improving system integration and user confidence.

Research Questions

  • What is the level of customer adoption of contactless payments at Access Bank?
  • What technical and operational challenges affect the performance of contactless systems?
  • How can Access Bank enhance the adoption and reliability of contactless payments?
